Betonite is a clay composed of a porous mineral. It is a laminar clay resulting form the aging of volcanic ash.
On contact with urine, the litter softens temporarily and forms small clusters (which become hard after formation), a process called the agglomeration.
The strength and speed of the litter agglomeration depends on the quality of the raw material used; the better the quality, the fastest the process.
