Overnight: There's no doubt that the best method is to thaw the food overnight in the refrigerator. Place the frozen raw meal, meat or fish in a sealed container and store it in the bottom compartment overnight.
* Thawed food stays fresh in the refrigerator only 3 days, as a result make sure the right package is chosen for your dog's size.
* This is the preferred methof of thawing.
However, if you occasionally have not planned well, you can fdollow the follwong method, although not ideal:
Same day: Leave the meal at room temperature in an airtight container. Be very cautious with this method duing hot summer months
CAUTION
- Wash your hand & your pet bowl good after handling Frozen BARF.
- Make sure you avoid leaks by enduring the containers are airtight
- Do not refreeze after thawing.
Since humans are the ones preparing the food, it is necessary to take proper precautions to avoid cross-contamination, just as you would when preparing your own meals:
- Rinse all cuts of meat/ fish before preparing (for preparing own recipes, not for complete meals that come ready)
- Use clean utensils. including pet's bowl, cutting board, knives etc.
- Wash all implements after using
- Wash hands thoroughly before and after handling raw food
- Prepare and store raw food away from areas where it may come into contact with your food, or with high-touch areas in your home
- Store raw food at the designated tempretures to discourage bacterial growth. Make proper accommodations when traveling with your dog.
-
Do not refreeze after thawing.
Bones are a crucial part of a BARF diet; stick to larger bones, since they help keep your dog’s teeth clean and pose less of a choking hazard. However, you should never feed your dog cooked bones — softer bones will break into shards when chewed, which can get lodged in your dog’s throat. If your dog has trouble with whole bones, ground bones make for easier digestion.
Most pre-prepared complete BARF diets clearly state that they should not be cooked as they contain bones. Do pay attenntion to package instructions and details.
